12 hour transit
Watch out for fast buggies in the airport at Kuala Lumpur. Our hotel (Pan Pacific) was a speedy 2 minute ride from the customs exit at the airport via golf buggy. I'm just glad there was no one around the blind corners.
The fact that our bags were checked straight through to Beijing was a blessing, as it gave us 2 hours extra sleep (though if we had remembered to pack out bathers in our carry-on bag we could have gone for a swim!).
8 hours flying, 12 hours transit, 6 hours flying, and we landed in Monkey Magic land. And our bags were there at the baggage claim (which we were not entirely confident of). This was also about the time I discovered that my ATM card was actually just a VISA card and didn't have the MISTRO/CIRRUS emblems on it that I was sure it had. Ah well, cash advances it is!
By 5:30pm we met up with Gabe (having caught the bus from the airport for 16RMB = AUD$2.66), and were soon stepping out of a cab and dumping our bags in his very comfortable apartment.
